Macaloney’s Buzz Cut Whiskey Review Canada: Tasting Notes, Value & Alternatives (2026)
Macaloney’s Buzz Cut is a unique Canadian single malt whisky that brings together Vancouver Island wildflower honey and ex-bourbon cask influence. With its eye-catching bottle, local inspiration and distinctive honeyed concept, it certainly stands out on the shelf.
But how does it drink?
In our experience, Buzz Cut wasn't quite our preferred style of whisky. While we appreciated the presentation and enjoyed exploring something different, the flavour profile didn't fully suit our personal palate, and we noticed some alcohol burn along the way.
That doesn't mean it won't appeal to the right drinker. If you enjoy exploring distinctive Canadian whiskies and are curious about honey-forward single malts, Buzz Cut is an interesting bottle to consider.

What Macaloney’s Buzz Cut Whiskey Actually Is
Buzz Cut is a Canadian single malt whisky produced by Macaloney’s Distillery in Victoria, British Columbia. It features Vancouver Island wildflower honey and ex-bourbon cask influence, giving it a distinctive identity within the Canadian whisky category.
The distillery describes its intended flavour profile with notes of honeysuckle, lemon zest, wildflower honey, honeydew melon, banoffee pie, warm vanilla and soft orchard fruit. It also states that the whisky contains no added colour and is non-chill filtered.
What makes Buzz Cut particularly interesting is its local inspiration. The wildflower honey comes from a Vancouver Island beekeeper, giving the whisky a connection to the island beyond its production location.

Tasting Notes (Our Experience)
Macaloney’s Buzz Cut whiskey certainly makes a great first impression. The bottle looks fantastic, and we really like the idea of incorporating Vancouver Island wildflower honey into a Canadian single malt whisky.
Unfortunately, the whisky itself wasn't for us.
We found the flavour profile didn't suit our personal palate, and there was some noticeable alcohol burn that took away from our enjoyment. We went into this bottle wanting to find something we'd really enjoy, but it simply wasn't a whisky we found ourselves wanting to return to.
That doesn't mean it won't appeal to other drinkers. Whisky is highly subjective, and those who enjoy floral, honey-forward single malts may have a very different experience. We can appreciate the thought behind the concept and the local ingredients, even though the finished whisky wasn't to our taste.

Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Canadian Whisky works best if you:

Skip it (or look elsewhere) if you:
Prefer traditional bourbon flavours

Usually stick to familiar, classic whisky profiles
Is Macaloney’s Buzz Cut Whiskey Worth It in Canada?
At $85 CAD for a 750 mL bottle, Buzz Cut feels a little pricey for us, especially considering it wasn't one of our favourite whiskies.
We appreciate the beautiful packaging and the unique Vancouver Island wildflower honey concept, but the flavour profile wasn't to our taste, and we noticed some alcohol burn. For that price, we'd personally rather spend our money on a bottle we'd enjoy more.
That doesn't mean Buzz Cut won't appeal to other drinkers, particularly those who enjoy honey-forward single malts. However, based on our experience, we wouldn't recommend it for our personal taste at this price. If you're curious, we'd suggest trying a pour before committing to a full bottle.
Can You Actually Find It in Canada?
Yes. Buzz Cut is available through Macaloney’s official website, although stock can vary.
The whisky is distilled, matured and bottled in Victoria, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. You can check current availability and pricing directly through the distillery.
Macaloney’s Buzz Cut Canadian Whisky vs John Sleeman & Sons Traditional Straight Whisky (Quick Take)
John Sleeman & Sons Traditional Straight Whisky: Sweeter, richer and more closely aligned with the traditional bourbon-style flavours we enjoy.
Macaloney’s Buzz Cut: A distinctive honey-inspired single malt with a floral, sweeter concept, although we found some alcohol burn and the flavour wasn't quite our style.
For us, John Sleeman & Sons would be the bottle we'd reach for first. However, these whiskies offer different experiences, and Buzz Cut may appeal more to someone who enjoys floral honey notes rather than traditional bourbon flavours.
Canadian Alternative We Think Is Worth It
If you're exploring Canadian whiskies and want something closer to the bourbon-style profiles we personally enjoy, we recommend:
Okanagan Spirits BRBN Bourbon-Style Whisky
We've tried BRBN ourselves and enjoy its sweeter, more familiar bourbon-inspired character. With notes of caramel, vanilla, oak and warm spice, it's a Canadian option we'd be more likely to recommend to someone with similar tastes to ours.
It offers a different direction from Buzz Cut, making it a useful alternative if honey-forward single malts aren't your preferred style.
Best Ways We Drink It
Neat: Worth trying in a small pour to explore its distinctive honey and floral character.
Over ice: Could be worth experimenting with if you prefer a cooler, more diluted whisky.
In a summer cocktail: We haven't tried Buzz Cut in a cocktail yet, but we could see its floral notes and Vancouver Island wildflower honey working nicely in refreshing summer drinks. A honey-forward whisky like this could be an interesting base for a light, citrusy cocktail.
Final Thoughts
Macaloney’s Buzz Cut caught our attention for all the right reasons on paper. The packaging looks fantastic, the Vancouver Island wildflower honey concept is distinctive, and we always appreciate seeing Canadian distilleries experiment with local ingredients.
Unfortunately, we just didn't enjoy this whisky. The flavour wasn't suited to our personal palate, and the noticeable alcohol burn made it harder for us to appreciate the overall experience. It's not a bottle we'd personally buy again, and we wouldn't recommend it to readers whose tastes are similar to ours.
That said, we don't want one bottle to define our opinion of the distillery as a whole. Macaloney's has a diverse lineup, and we'd still be interested in trying other expressions to see whether we find a better match for our preferences.
For us, Buzz Cut is a case where we appreciate the creativity, the presentation and the local inspiration more than the whisky itself. If you're curious about honey-forward single malts, a tasting pour may be worthwhile, but we'd suggest trying it before committing to the full bottle.
Final Score: 60/100
