Shelter Point Ripple Rock Single Malt Review Canada: Tasting Notes, Value & Alternatives (2026)
Shelter Point Ripple Rock Single Malt is a Canadian whisky inspired by Campbell River's famous 1958 Ripple Rock explosion.
It's made from single malt barley and produced using traditional copper pot stills, with water from Shelter Point's aquifer. The whisky is matured in American oak, including alligator-charred virgin oak and bourbon barrels. Shelter Point's current tasting profile highlights vanilla spice, oak, caramel, raisins, barbecue, pepper and clove, with toffee and chocolate on the finish.
The bottle has also received some impressive recognition, including 93 points and Editor's Choice from Whisky Advocate, as well as Editor's Choice from Whisky Magazine.
For us, though, the experience was a little different from some of the more intense official tasting descriptions. We found Ripple Rock to be lighter, sweeter and incredibly easy to drink, with sweet oak and caramel standing out most.
And honestly, that's something we really enjoyed about it.

Tasting Notes (Our Experience)
Ripple Rock was a pleasant surprise for us.
The first thing we noticed was just how smooth and easy to drink it is. There was minimal to almost no burn, which made it incredibly approachable right from the first sip.
The whisky is on the lighter side, but we still found plenty to enjoy. For our palate, the standout flavours were sweet oak and caramel, with a nice underlying sweetness that made the whisky very easy to sip.
Shelter Point's official notes include vanilla, raisins, barbecue, pepper, clove, toffee and chocolate. We didn't experience all of those flavours as strongly, but we definitely picked up on the sweeter oak and caramel side of the whisky.
What we liked most is that Ripple Rock doesn't demand much from you. You can pour a glass, sit back and enjoy it without dealing with a lot of heat or harshness.
It's lighter than some of the Canadian whiskies we've tried, but we don't necessarily see that as a negative. In fact, we think that's part of what makes it so approachable.
Overall, we'd describe Ripple Rock as sweet, smooth, light and easy-drinking, with enough flavour to keep it interesting.

We wouldn't call it our favourite Canadian whisky we've tried, but that's not really a criticism of the bottle. There are simply other Canadian whiskies that have stood out more for our palate.
Ripple Rock is more of an easygoing, enjoyable bottle that we can see a lot of whisky drinkers appreciating.

BlackFox Triticosecale: Smoother, more flavourful and more impressive overall for our palate, with a unique grain character and virtually no burn.

Best Ways We Drink It
Neat: Our favourite way to experience the whisky. It's smooth enough that we don't feel the need to add anything.
With ice: A good option if you want to make the lighter profile even softer and more refreshing.
In a cocktail: This is where Ripple Rock really impressed us. Its sweet, lighter profile works extremely well in cocktails without becoming overpowering. Shelter Point even features Ripple Rock in its own Ripple Rock Smash and Old Fashioned recipes.
Final Thoughts
Shelter Point Ripple Rock Single Malt is a bottle we genuinely enjoyed trying.
What stood out most to us was how smooth, approachable and easy-drinking it is. There's minimal to almost no burn, and the sweet oak and caramel flavours give it enough character to make each pour enjoyable.
It's definitely on the lighter side, but we actually think that's part of its appeal. You can easily sip it neat, enjoy it over ice or use it in a cocktail without the whisky becoming overwhelming.
For us, Ripple Rock lands around the middle of the pack compared with the Canadian whiskies we've tried. It's not one of our absolute favourites, but we also wouldn't hesitate to pour another glass.
And that's ultimately what we like about this bottle: it's simply easy to enjoy.
